Exercise

"Every object in a state of uniform motion tends to remain in that state of motion unless an external force is applied to it." Newton's first law is very much true of the human body. The less I exercise, the more difficult it is to get my butt moving again, and vice-versa.  If I go for a period of time without exercising, I feel noticibly less inclinced toward any physical activity.  When I was a teen-ager, I said that I will never let myself get fat.  Now I find myself having to exert a lot more effort than I used to in order to avoid it.  I'm sure that when kids come into the picture, it will complicate the matter even further.

While it is growing harder and harder to get motivated, no matter what the age, the post-benefits of exercise are always readily evident.  The feeling of endorphins (endogenous morphines) pumping through your blood, giving you a sort of natural high.  The way your body feels more energetic when you've been exercising, The cleansing of your pores from a vigorous sweat.  Even sleep is deeper and more restful.  And of course, the pride that results from looking in the mirror and noticing your muscles rippling, if only a little bit more than before.

I've heard a lot of people say how much they don't like to exercise, or they hate running, or that going to the gym is boring.  Well, this is true with me as well.  So why do I do it?  The paragraph above explains it all.  It's the results!  I'm sure you've heard the phrase 'no pain, no gain'.  Well, that's truly the way it works.  You have to do the things you don't want to do in order to look and/or feel the way that you want to.  This is also true with mental and spiritual growth.  It takes effort to study a book for school, or to further your knowledge in your current career.  Similarly, it might not always be fun to read the Bible, or to dig into a book which enhances your understanding of Theology, or even to take the time to pray regularly.  But if you want to grow in something, or even simply not lose that which you already know, feel, or have, then you have to discipline yourself to do what's uncomfortable.  Also, the more that you do it, the more immediate and noticible the results will be.
